Computer vision syndrome can cause discomfort and vision problems. American employees spend an average of 7 hours per day at a computer, either in the office or working remotely. Adults spend an average of 3 1/2 hours a day browsing on their phone. In today's tech-driven society, screen time is necessary. At Reeve-Woods Eye Center, we treat computer vision syndrome.
Computer vision syndrome can cause a wide array of problems with your eyes and other parts of your body.
Symptoms include:
Headaches
Neck and shoulder pain
Burning, red, or dry eyes
Double or blurred vision
Eye twitching
Because images on a screen are made of pixels, it is more difficult to focus on words or images than it is with printed materials. Your eyes slip out of focus and must be refocused frequently. This overworks the eyes over a period of time.
Viewing angles are often different as well. Tech neck is a condition that arises from the unnatural position of the head when viewing a screen.
Computers, tablets, and smartphones use blue light. Blue light also contributes to eyestrain and may even lead to retina damage and permeant vision changes over time.
An ophthalmologist will begin with a complete eye exam. If you are diagnosed with computer vision syndrome, an eye care specialist can provide computer vision treatment. This often includes special eyewear, usually known as computer glasses.
Your ophthalmologist may also perform or prescribe eye exercises. These are essentially physical therapy for your eyes and can relieve eye problems associated with computer vision syndrome.
