Importance of Postoperative Care

After our ophthalmologist performs cataract surgery, you will need to take certain precautions to protect your eye in its fragile state. You will be given dark glasses to wear if your eye feels sensitive to light. Make sure you have someone to pick you up from our facility. You cannot drive immediately after cataract eye surgery or until our doctor has cleared you.

When you get home, rest and take it easy for a few days to allow your eye to heal. Don’t do any heavy lifting or strenuous exercises for two weeks after surgery. Another important thing to remember is to take your eye drops as prescribed to prevent inflammation and control eye pressure.

It is important to protect your eye during recovery. When you sleep (or nap) during the first week, you should wear a protective eye cover to prevent accidental injury. Our eye surgeon will also suggest you do not swim or get in a hot tub to keep the chance of infection down. You can wash your face, but avoid splashing water in your eye for the first week.

Don’t wear makeup for two weeks after surgery and don't rub your eye. Staying indoors can minimize the risk of getting dust, pollen, or dirt in your eye.
