Laser Treatment for Glaucoma

If you are looking for an ophthalmologist or eye surgeon in Chico for laser treatment of a condition such as glaucoma, it would be a good idea to look into an eye care center such as the Reeve-Woods Eye Center. We have years of experience providing Chico residents with laser treatment services.

What to Expect from Laser Treatment

Laser treatment, also known as laser trabeculoplasty, uses a laser to help drain away fluid in your eye, lowering the pressure inside of your eye. It is used to treat open-angle glaucoma. There are other types of laser treatments for other types of glaucoma. You should ask your eye doctor about options for your specific situation.

If you are getting a laser trabeculoplasty, there are certain things that you should expect. Before the treatment, your doctor is going to put drops in your eyes to numb them. For the treatment, you will be sitting in front of a laser machine, where your doctor will aim a laser into your eye through a special lens. This is an attempt to drain fluid from your eye.

After Laser Treatment

After the procedure, you may experience soreness or swelling. In some situations, the laser can scratch the cornea or make it very dry. Sometimes, this can be painful, but the pain will subside as soon as the cornea heals. Your doctor can also give you eye drops, which can be helpful.

The majority of people who have this procedure can resume their normal activities the next day after the treatment. However, right after the treatment, you might have blurry vision and eye irritation, so you will probably not be able to drive from the doctor's office.

Laser treatment works for most, but not all. In four to six weeks after the procedure, you will see if it worked for you. Most people will need to continue taking glaucoma medications after the procedure, and they will need to go to follow-up visits where an eye doctor will check their eye pressure. Some people will need to get additional treatments, as effects will wear off over time. Our ophthalmologist will guide you through the glaucoma treatment process and help you decide whether or not laser treatment is right for you.
