Uv Safety Month

UV Safety Month is the perfect time to spread the word about how crucial it is to protect the eyes from the harmful effects of UV rays. While most people think about using sunscreen for skin protection, they often neglect to consider the harm these rays may cause to their eyes. If you are planning to spend time outdoors in Chico or Paradise, work with our optometry and ophthalmology professionals from Reeve-Woods Eye Center can ensure you are protecting and preventing potential damage to your eyes.

How to Protect Your Eyes from the Sun

While your optometrist or ophthalmologist can provide additional tips and advice regarding how you can protect your eyes from the sun, here are some others:

  • Select sunglasses that will block 100 percent of all UVA and UVB rays

  • Choose sunglasses that feature wraparound lenses so that the rays can’t come in from the side of the eyeglass frame

  • Wear sunglasses on cloudy days since the UV rays can pass through the clouds

  • Don’t rely on your contacts for protection

  • Avoid looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, as it can cause solar retinopathy

  • Avoid being in the sun during peak times of day, which occurs between 10 am and 2 pm

See Your Optometrist or Ophthalmologist Regularly

It’s a good idea to use the above tips to ensure your eyes are fully protected, but you also need to go to the eye doctor regularly. Seeing an eye doctor for an exam helps detect any existing damage in the eyes that needs to be treated or addressed.
