Choosing the Right Eyeglasses

In most cases, aside from the basic reading glasses, one can get over-the-counter at a pharmacy or grocery store, eyeglasses are first determined by prescription and eye exam. A person goes to a Chico & Paradise optometrist who performs an eye exam and determines the focusing condition of the eyes. If assistance is needed, then the eye doctor prescribes a formula for eyeglass lenses that should be ordered and used by the patient. Once filled out, the patient either works through the eye doctor’s office or an eyeglasses provider and has the specific lens prescription created with a frame.

What to Know about Eyeglasses in General

There are lots of choices and you will be faced with plenty of fashion differences. The lenses themselves can also be filled out with different choices from a single lens to a bifocal mix to a progressive lens as well. The lens itself is, interestingly enough, not made of glass now. Most are made from polycarbonate, a type of plastic. This material increases safety and the longevity of the glasses. That said it’s still possible to get glass lenses as well.

Lens Differences to be Aware Of

Single-lens styles are just that, one focusing ability, usually distance or up-close for reading. Bifocals and trifocals provide a mix of different lens capabilities in the same lens. The most obvious has a line in the middle that allows a person to look down for reading and up for distance viewing. Modern progressive styles blend the differences so the line is not so visible. Transitions are a lens type that can combine focusing difference as well as change from clear to shade for sunlight protection. Again, your optometrist will provide your eyeglass formula, but you have choices in how it's applied in eyeglasses you wear.
