Why is Uv Protection Important?

If you're getting ready to go outside this summer, you probably slather yourself, your kids, and your spouse in sunscreen to prevent UV damage, but what about your eyes? Skin needs to be protected from the sun, but your eyes can suffer severe damage from unchecked UV radiation as well. An ophthalmologist can protect your vision as you enjoy the summer, and if you're in the Chico, CA area, the doctors at the Reeve-Woods Eye Center are here for you.

What does UV light do to eyes?

In the short term, exposure to UV light causes a condition in your eyes known as photokeratitis, which is a lot like a sunburn you might have on your skin. The symptoms of photokeratitis are:

  • Pain and irritation of the eye

  • Redness or swelling

  • Uncontrollable tearing

  • A sensation of having an object stuck in your eye or that your eye is scratched

  • Sensitivity to light, headaches, and fatigue

  • In some cases, people who suffer from migraines can have them triggered by short-term exposure to UV light

While these symptoms are certainly frustrating, they are not permanent and will heal on their own.

Long-term, chronic exposure to UV light can cause much more debilitating conditions, including (but not limited to):

  • Macular degeneration

  • Cataracts

  • Increased risk of eye cancer

You can avoid these problems by simply wearing sunglasses when you're outside, working with tanning beds, lasers, or welding gear.

What type of sunglasses are the best?

You can buy sunglasses just about anywhere, but in a lot of cases, they're only rated to block visible light and make it so you don't have to squint. An ophthalmologist can help you find the best styles of sunglasses that work with your prescription to ensure a high degree of UV blocking and clear vision.

In order for sunglasses to actually protect your eyes, they need to:

  • Block at least 99% of all UV light, and at least 75% of visible light

  • Have proper lens coloration to ensure your ability to actually see isn't hindered

  • They need to fit properly to protect your peripheral vision as well

Can an eye doctor help me get the best sunglasses for me?

An ophthalmologist can absolutely find the perfect fit, prescription, and light-blocking sunglasses for you. Whether you've got transition lenses or a favorite pair of actual sunglasses, it's about more than a fashion statement. Sunglasses are critical to protecting your vision, and if you're in the Chico, CA area, give Reeve-Woods Eye Center a call to see how easy it is to start protecting your eyes today for better vision tomorrow.
